Golden Oak gets its name from large white oaks that still grace the course, turning a golden hue during fall season. It's located in the scenic Windsor Valley, along the Susquehanna River as it bends toward Pennsylvania.
The original nine holes – on the lower side of the road (Rt. 79) – were built in the late 1920's by two brothers of Scottish descent, John and Jim McGinty, natives of neighboring Susquehanna, PA, who operated a small dairy and beer garden alongside their golf tract.
By the 1960's, nine more were designed on the topside of the road by Paul Kern, making the “Windsor Golf Club” fully playable as 18 holes. In the early 1990's, the club was purchased and refurbished by Dong Yew, who renamed it.
Golden Oak – with its upper and lower designs- combines testy golf holes and rugged hillside views on the front side...with a shorter, compact layout on the back. The 1st hole is its longest, a 500-yard dogleg (par-5) past willow, rising gently to an elevated green bordered by ash trees. A dogleg at #2 marches back down to the clubhouse.
At #3, stay left center- away from the fairway's right side, where a large white oak guards a thick tree line (#1 handicap). The 4th is deceptively short, over ponds to an island green, its back apron emblazoned with a “Golden Oak” topiary: the signature hole.
The 5th is a tough uphill dogleg (ladies #1 handicap).
Three consecutive par-3's follow at #6, #7, and #8, built tightly into the side hill around tall white pine. From the 9th tee are views of four ponds- two of them hazards on the way home.
The back is 700 yards shorter than the front, featuring smaller greens and a lovely par-5 (#12) curling along the Susquehanna. With a handful of short par-4s, the back can be an ego-booster...but watch for the “saucer green” at #17.
Finishing at #18 is a scant dogleg home around swampland: play it straight and safe to fairway
Riding carts must be kept to designated cart paths. Yew's Golden Oak is dotted with hickory, spruce, Scots pine, ash, willow -abounded by farmland, a monastery, and the lush Susquehanna River Valley.
